Historical Narratives of INS Khukri

 

 INS Khukri, a notable vessel of the Indian Navy, was part of the Leander-class frigates and played a significant role in the naval history of India. The ship was commissioned on December 23, 1971, during a period marked by geopolitical tensions in South Asia. Named after the traditional Khukri knife used by the Gurkhas, it symbolizes bravery and valour.

INS Khukri was built in the United Kingdom and was one of the four ships belonging to the Leander-class, which were designed to enhance the capabilities of the Indian Navy during 1960s and 70s. With a displacement of approximately 3,200 tons, it was equipped with state-of-the-art weaponry for anti-aircraft and anti-submarine warfare, reflective of its era's technological advancements.

The most significant chapter in the history of INS Khukri unfolded during the Indo-Pakistan War of 1971. The war was primarily connected with the Bangladesh Liberation movement, and India intervened to assist the Bangladeshi people against the oppressive regime of West Pakistan. INS Khukri played an active role in naval operations, providing support to Indian ground forces and executing strategic missions in the conflict.

On December 9, 1971, while INS Khukri was on patrol near the coast of Gujarat, the ship was struck by two torpedoes by the Pakistan Navy using their submarine PNS Hangor. This resulted in the sinking of INS Khukri leading to significant loss of life and marking a critical moment in naval warfare. Out of a crew of 197, 18 crew members perished and many others sustained injuries. The sinking of Khukri was a reminder of the brutal realities of naval conflict and the vulnerabilities present even in larger naval operations.

The legacy of INS Khukri extends beyond its tragic sinking. Following the lessons learned from its sinking, there was a shift toward increased emphasis on anti-submarine warfare (ASW) capabilities. Enhanced training and new asset acquisitions, including modern surface ships and submarines equipped with advanced sonar and missile systems, reflect the Navy’s commitment to safeguarding the nation's maritime borders. INS Khukri stands not only as a ship that was tragically lost, but also as a symbol of resilience and the highest tradition of service in the Indian Navy.
